OBSERVATORY HOUSES

The Observatory Houses takes advantage of the wonderful scenario of the Roccascalegna’s fortress, in Italy, to host tourists and astronomy professionals. In addition to the houses with spaces dedicated to observation of the sky, the “Sky Lounge” has a large telescope of advanced reach, besides a didactic space with small telescopes, restaurant and bookstore.

CONCEPTION

The typology of Observatory Houses was created from the iconic figure of a simple house. From the icon of the house, the figure becomes a bold structure in cantilever with few points of support in the ground. The structural design aims to have the least interference of foundations in the rugged terrain of high slope, beyond providing a sensation of lightness. Glass openings on the roof work like telescopes for eye observation from indoor environments such as bedrooms and living rooms. The balconies make possible the contact with the outside, experiencing directly the climate and the incredible views of the mountainous landscape without leaving home.

SUSTAINABILITY

The houses have solar energy system for water heating and power generation through photovoltaic panels. Rainwater is collected on the roof and stored in lower reservoirs for reuse in the sanitary facilities and irrigation of the vegetation. Natural lighting and ventilation contribute to the house’s energy efficiency, as does the economical automated lighting system.
